"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men" (John 1:1-4).
Our home is quickly beginning to look like Christmas. The tree is up. The mantle and bannister is decked in lights and garland. And yes, the nativity set is brightly lit on our piano.
As Christians, this nativity scene is central to our understanding of Christmas. God becomes a man and dwells among us. He enters this world as an obscure child in a poor family! Yet, we also understand that the Son of God really did not begin in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. John reminds us that our Lord has no beginning. In fact, when the "beginning" began, Jesus was already there, with God!
As you contemplate Christmas this year, ponder this truth.
