Proverbs 3:5-8 reads, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones."
We live in a world that tells us our identity is shaped by what we personally feel and think. We are determined to be our own master. To our detriment, we often turn from what God has said and turn towards what seems wise in our eyes.
The Scriptures, however calls us to a different identity. In Creation, God told Adam and Eve who they were and what they ought to do. Enticed by the serpent, this first couple determined to follow their own desire, rather than God's Word. The results, have been catastrophic. Instead of tasting freedom we have earned pain, and death.
Despite this rebellion, God graciously showed us love and sent Jesus to take upon Himself that pain and death. He then calls us to trust in Jesus and his completed work. He calls us to follow him. He says that we believers are no longer our own, rather we have been purchased with a price. Our identity is no longer self but Jesus.
As Christians, it is not our will, our plans, our desires that we trust and follow. Rather, we trust in the Lord with all our heart. We follow his paths even when it seems difficult and impossible. The result will be life!
